Friday, August 29, 2008
Allegations of abuse at a Hancock County nursing home have drawn the attention of state investigators.  The Attorney General’s Office is involved in an investigation of the Birchaven Retirement Village in Findlay. Eight nurses were fired from the facility after falsely reporting they had cared for a patient’s wound, when it became obvious they hadn’t.  Barb Lockard works for Birchaven and made a statement on the situation today.  She says that the patient in question made a full recovery and still resides at Birchaven.  Lockard added that they’ve complied with investigators, and have put systems in place to prevent future instances.

Blanchard Valley Health System owns the retirement home, and reported the incident to the state, which is required by Ohio law.

Confusion Over Absentee Ballot Mailings

Confusion at the state level means that some Ohio voters are automatically getting applications from their board of elections, while others aren’t...
Thursday, August 28, 2008
Some Ohio voters will get an absentee ballot application in the mail in early September, while others won't.

Voters in 17 of Ohio’s 88 counties will receive an application for an absentee ballot. Everyone else will have to take the extra step of requesting one if they want to vote by mail.  Allen County will be one of those counties.  Board of elections president Keith Cunningham says that despite that, it's still easy to get an application.  You can download it by clicking here.

Republicans in the state house said they intended all counties to offer the mailings when they passed legislation in June providing $3 million to cover the costs of postage. But Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner says Republicans didn't consult her.
